# Do you find maths challenging?

Let’s answer this important question…

**Do you find maths challenging?**

Are maths a challenge for you? Are you looking at the formulas and calculation in this module and wondering if you need to multiply first or add? Do you work within brackets first or last?

It’s ok. You are not alone! Calculations can certainly be challenging. But, you really want to make sure you understand these calculations before moving onto your next module and working with clients (and their children).

First, you want to make sure you are using the correct formulas. These formulas are found in Module 10, Unit 2 lesson. Please, go through each of these a few times.

Then, break down each question into parts:
* Is this calculation for a boy or a girl?
* How old is this child?
* What is their PAL?

Refer to your Daily Caloric Needs Calculator™ handout to identify which formula you will use. Then plug the correct DCN Calculator page.
* Remember to work inside of the brackets first ( ).
* Then, within the brackets, do the multiplication first, and then the addition.
* Next, when there are no more brackets, the multiplication is done next.
* Finally, any additions and subtractions can be calculated (from left to right).

Go through this example of Angelo which was found within your course materials to help you get a hang of the maths even more (we broke down the steps even further to help you out): [__Calorie Answer PDF__](https://courses.thehealthsciencesacademy.org/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/CBDN_M10_U2_Calorie-answer.pdf)

Alternatively, you can also watch this video which goes through another example (including the maths) step-by-step.

Also, check out the Test Your Knowledge questions at the end of the unit as well for some more examples that you can practise with before moving on to the quiz.

The more that you practise these formulas, the better you will get at them, and the easier they will become!
